SCHUKO - Housing Schukowitzgasse

 Back to Projects list
Location
Wien, Austria
Year
2009

The government-funded residential complex on Schukowitzgasse emerged from a direct commission. On a property of more than 17,000 m², only a relatively small area of just 4,000 m² was developed, which allowed for extensive garden spaces.

All of the sixty-four living units have two floors and are furnished with semi-basements. The low-rise, row-like construction is surrounded by green spaces on both sides, with a garden in front and back. The green façade design allows the building to downright merge with the landscape. All that arranges and accentuates the four building slabs are the recessed roof inserts, encased in luminous red Eternit panels, which also let in a great deal of natural lighting on the upper floors. On the street side, the row of buildings is framed by a yellow, perforated plate band—although it appears permeable, it defines the property as an independent space and shields it from the street.
