What were the circumstances of receiving the commission for this project?

We had won a design competition with the university for a different project, when they asked us to look at providing a structure for a chiller plant that was already being developed. We submitted a proposal to the university, which was accepted.

Can you describe your design process for the building?

The process involves a rational approach to design, based on function, performance, materials and construction. The resulting expression becomes a piece of art, displaying technical equipment and its working in a celebratory way, exposed to view.

How does the completed building compare to the project as designed? Were there any dramatic changes between the two and/or lessons learned during construction?

The building was completed very closely to the project design. As was planned, only half (approximately) of the chiller plant equipment is installed at this time - allowing for expansion for future campus needs.

How does the building compare to other projects in your office, be it the same or other building types?

While this building type represents only a small percentage of our work, the same rational approach to design is the basis for all of our projects, with the same emphasis on function of space and true expression of materials.
