Battersea Power Station Designs Unveiled

Last fall the Battersea Power Station Development Company selected Norman Foster and Frank Gehry for the phase 3 redevelopment of the impressive Battersea Power Station in London. Last week their designs for mixed-use buildings straddling the new high street (to be called Electric Boulevard) were unveiled to the public. The projects will become the gateway to the larger development and will consist of 1,300 dwellings, 160 hotel rooms, and 350,000-sf of retail space.

What would become Gehry's first building in London clearly exhibits the architect's signature flowing facades. Foster's design, which would add to the many buildings by the firm in its home city, seems to respond to the adjacency of Gehry's building through its undulating plan.

The phase 3 plan is part of the larger Battersea Power Station master plan, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, that consists of over 3,400 homes as well as offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, community and leisure facilities and 18 acres of open space.
