ISH Energy: How the energy revolution can be successful

Every two years, and again in 2017, the Frankfurt exhibition grounds fully reflect the current trends of «The Bathroom Experience» and technical innovations in building, air-conditioning  and energy technology: The world’s leading trade fair ISH opens its gates from 14 to 18 March for about 200,000 expected visitors from Germany and abroad, who want to obtain specific information in the fields of «Energy» and «Water». They can get professional directions in the World-Architects Guided Tours, which present all the important things one should not miss at this year’s ISH.

For five days, Frankfurt will again be the place to go for architects, engineers, designers, craftspeople, and professional visitors from the building industry, who want to inform themselves of new sanitary solutions and developments in bathroom design, energy-efficient heating technology or sustainable building services. This year, ISH – the world’s leading trade fair for The Bathroom Experience, building services, energy, air-conditioning technology and renewable energies – not only focuses on home and bathroom comfort:
«Water.Energy.Life.» is this year’s motto, which puts three terms (each deliberately accentuated with a full stop and spelled without a blank) in a sequence, with its last world indicating what building is actually all about: people and their way to live. How this is achieved can be explored at the ISH, as usual with a content-related division into two focus areas: on the east side of the exhibition grounds, in the Halls 3 to 6 and in the Festhalle, is the «ISH Water» section where the exhibitors primarily attend to design-oriented bathroom solutions under the headline of «Water is Life». Apart from fittings, elegantly curved bathtubs or high-tech toilets, primary attention is, of course, also directed to the efficient use of the valuable resource water. On the west side of the exhibition grounds, the Halls 8 to 11 accommodate the «ISH Energy» section featuring building and energy technology, renewable energies at home as well as air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation technology under the title of «Aircontec». Sensory perception and elegant design come upon substantial, economic, partly also political topics, like the reduction of CO2 emissions and end energy consumption. In 2017, this is particularly tangible in the ISH Energy section, which wants to take an ambitious look at the future: «Energy revolution with a bright future – we have the solutions». This is saying something!

Tackling climate protection and resource conservation now
Almost 60 years after its debut, the ISH takes place at a precarious moment in terms of the energy and climate policy situation because of the Climate Conference in Marrakech in November 2016, where nothing less than the implementation of the Paris Climate Protection Agreement was discussed. As a quick reminder: At the end of 2015, almost 200 countries had set themselves the goal in the French capital to stop global warming through a worldwide energy revolution. According to intentions, the increase in global warming should until 2050 be held well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels by, amongst other things, 45 states completely terminating their use of oil, gas and coal. The Paris Agreement has been effective since 4 November 2016 and applies to all industrial and developing countries.

In Europe, people are specifically working on the improvement of climate protection goals. In October 2014, it was already agreed to reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent as compared to 1990 until 2030, increase the share of renewable energies to 27 percent of total energy generation until 2030, and reduce end energy consumption by 27 percent as compared to 2014. In Germany, almost 40 percent of the energy are consumed in buildings. Private households alone require 85 percent of the energy for heating and hot water preparation, which is why major savings are feasible here. The aim of the German government is that the building stock will be almost climate-neutral by the middle of the century. This is subject to a proviso of an 85 percent reduction in CO2 emissions and an 80 percent reduction in primary energy consumption. Especially energy requirements for space heating and hot water offer great saving potential; and this is not restricted to the modernisation of millions of outdated heating systems. To achieve these ambitious aims, the German heating industry focuses on, amongst other things, a better interlinking of efficiency and renewable energies by means of building systems. The strategy therefore is: heat and renewable electricity shall grow together.

At this point, «ISH Energy» comes into play and presents the latest developments in the fields of energy efficiency, hybrid systems, fuel cell heating systems, and comfort in buildings. Other core themes in the Halls 8 to 11 are digital heating systems and therewith the increasing integration of IT into heating technologies. In the «Aircontec» sub-section, the air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation industry also contributes new products and ideas, for example, heat pumps for heating and cooling or solar air-conditioning. Energy-efficient fans for ventilation and refrigeration systems as well as heat-recovery systems are also part of the technology spectrum presented at the ISH.

What else «ISH Energy» has to offer
New products and technologies are not the only visitor magnets of the trade fair. Additionally, the event offers many specialist lectures, special shows, panel discussions, and competitions. The «Nord-Foyer» in Hall 11.1, for example, hosts the Air-Conditioning Forum where keynote lectures and panel discussions focus on the current state of air-conditioning and ventilation technology. The Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH) together with Messe Frankfurt organises the ISH Technology and Energy Forum at the Galleria 1 between Halls 8 and 9. The multimedia exhibition presents modern heating systems, while experts from associations and the industry at the lecture forum take up topics like energy carriers in the heat market, the digitalisation of heating technology or the interlinking of electricity and heat. Future-oriented technologies such as fuel cell heating systems also play an important role.

Professional guided tours through the world of ISH
Regular trade fair visitors have long appreciated this special service, but newcomers to the trade fair are quickly enthused, too: At ISH 2017, World-Architects again provides free Guided Tours through the trade fair jungle, guided by renowned architects, interior designers, planners, and engineers – experts who draw upon their work and talk about it. From Tuesday until Thursday of the trade fair, they will provide good orientation and stimulate deepening conversations with colleagues and manufacturers. And this has already become a classic, too: the Friday of the trade fair is a highlight day when the editorial team of World-Architects will guide you to the most significant discoveries at the ISH.

A visit to the trade fair can be so relaxed, …
… if you trustingly put yourselves into the hands of World-Architects: Arrive at 10:30 at the (by the way: newly renovated) Outlook Lounge right at the top of the stairwell in front of Hall 4.2 and get into the right mood as you have a relaxing chat with colleagues and guides over a cup of coffee. Join the first Guided Tour from 11:00 to 13:00, which is followed by a light lunch (this is also possible at the Outlook Lounge). Participate in the second Guided Tour of the day from 15:00 to 17:00, which is, of course, different from the first one. After your return you still have one hour for individual visits to stands, before the trade fair closes at 18:00. “Energy revolution with a bright future – We have the solutions” promises the ISH trade fair in Frankfurt/Main. Participants of the World-Architects Guided Tours obtain comprehensive information on technical and commercial solutions, with which the implementation of the double strategy of efficiency and renewable energies may indeed come true. And they will do so without the usual stress of a trade fair visit – that’s how you can look positively into the future! Thomas Geuder, Alexandra Busch
