The project's brief calls for a seven-storey industrial building that incorporates the company's branding colour of green into the facade of the building. We wanted a fresh and dynamic application of green on the facade. This is done so by adding a second skin of sun shading devices to shade the building from the western sun. The curvature at the edge of the building allows for a continuous flow of the sun- shading fins, which creates a subtle visual interest. We studied a various combination of greens with varying degrees of angles, spacing – drawing inspiration from leaves foliages.
A single sheet aluminium expanded metal mesh is cut and folded into a 'Z' configuration for structural stability. To reduce construction waste (as well as a value engineering solution, we optimised the size of the fins based on the manufactured size of the expanded mesh sheets. We reduced 'designed waste' through this manufacturing process.
The plot sites itself slightly recessed from the main thoroughfare Macpherson Road. Due to authorities requirements, two fire escape staircase was designed to service this building. The back-facing staircase is now the main frontage of the building as the main visibility structure from Macpherson Road – a busy six-way road. As an urban and landmark strategy, we wanted to highlight the escape staircase not as a practical entity but as an urban sculptural structure.
We painted the core of the escape staircase with two tones of green. The above creates two vertical illuminances that punctuate along the stretch of dusky industrial estates.
