Research Culture in Architecture – International Conference on Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration in Architecture

Fatuk, Faculty of Architecture of the TU Kaiserslautern, invites you to the international conference „Research Culture in Architecture – International Conference on Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration in Architecture” (RCA 2018) on September 27th and 28th.

The Faculty of Architecture of the TU Kaiserslautern (fatuk) invites researchers to meet in a quiet and stimulating environment, on the edge of the only transboundary biosphere reserve in Germany, the Palatinate Forest. This conference meeting serves to present current research projects from the various fields of architecture and to promote discussion on relevant issues: What is research in architecture? Do buildings contain innovations that have not been published because they were not understood as research? How does research relate to the practice of architecture? Does research in architecture happen exclusively at universities? Or also in practice?

Architecture itself is as complex as a discipline as these questions are and its scientific approaches in research are correspondingly complex. Current developments in interdisciplinary architectural research will be presented at RCA 2018 and their research approaches will be examined as well as their relevance for design. Research culture in architecture will be discussed by researchers from theory and practice.

The invited keynote speakers present their outstanding, current projects and offer an overview of the diverse topics and fields of research in architecture. Margitta Buchert, LUH Hannover, has long been dealing with the core topic of the conference 'Designing and Researching' and has set one of her main research areas in the field of 'Reflective Design'. Theory and practice are combined by Christian Derix. He leads the SuperSpace research division of Woods Bagot architects in Sydney, who develop computerbased design applications for generative and analytical design processes in architecture and urban planning with an emphasis on spatial design and human use. Natural building materials are the design basis of the Natural Building Lab run by Eike Roswag-Klinge, TU Berlin. The lab unites research, teaching and practice and stands for resource-positive architecture. The currently acting president of the worldwide platform "Research Association for Robots in Architecture", Sigrid Brell-Cokcan, RWTH Aachen is researching the use of robots in individual production. Caitlin Mueller and her research group "Digital Structures" in Cambridge are developing novel digital tools that can be used as a synthesis of static and architectural requirements. On the other hand, Michael Hensel, The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) criticizes the increasing fragmentation of architectural discourse and seeks out the active power of architecture, which dynamically interacts with human and the environment.

Researchers from theory and practice are cordially invited to submit their research abstracts until June 11, 2018 to answer the current Call for Papers, to present and reflect on their diverse questions and results on architectural research. The international event is the start of a series of conferences.
