Based on a feasibility study conducted by AS+P and PROPROJEKT, Munich applied to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018. Munich was to stage all the ice-skating competitions, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. As the Olympic Park in Munich is renowned as an outstanding example of the sustainable use of Olympic venues, the bid concept integrated two new multi-function halls in the Olympic Park and envisaged the Olympic Village and a media village in the direct vicinity of the Park. As a “Snow Park”, Garmisch-Partenkirchen was to be the venue for the Alpine and Nordic competitions. The use of the existing track in Schönau am Königssee for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton rounded out the overall concept.
The "Applicant City Phase" was concluded in June 2010 with the submission of the Mini BID BOOK and the subsequent appointment of Munich as a Candidate-City. During the "Candidate City Phase" the concept was elaborated in detail, resulting in an approx. 400-page bid book, which was presented to the IOC in early 2011. The decision on the host of the Games was made by a vote by the IOC, which, in July 2011, awarded the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to PyeongChang in South Korea.
As part of the “Munich 2018 Consortium – AS&P/PROPROJEKT” AS+P was responsible for the following areas: the elaboration and coordination of master planning based on “Sports Venues and Non-Sports Venues”, “Transport and Traffic” and “Accommodation” during the "Applicant City Phase" and "Candidate City Phase" the coordination of and concept for the venue visits by the IOC Evaluation Commission, as well as the presentation of the venue concept to representatives of the Commission presentations and the provision of substantive information at question-and-answer sessions fol- lowing the technical presentations during the visit by the IOC Evaluation Commission, as well as in further political committees of relevance in the course of the bidding process
