Grafton Architects

On 11 December Yvonne Farrell and Shelly McNamara will be the guests of A+ and BOZAR as they will give a lecture on their work and architectural approach.

Founded in 1978 by the Irish architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelly McNamara, Grafton Architects stands out for its brutalist aesthetic that constantly questions concepts of scale, mass and gravity. This approach is nevertheless deeply rooted in what is the primordial concern of this duo of architects: to create an architecture that is committed to respect for a sense of place. Profoundly marked by the city of Dublin and its history, their ambition is to produce a contemporary architecture that is sensitive to the specificities of the context and its past in order to create what they call a "new geography". As such, their work is an invitation to reflect on the way a building is rooted in its site and thus brings into play relations between past and present. Their projects seek to be a part of the fabric of the city and offer its inhabitants the supports of a new urbanity.

Over the past 40 years, GRAFTON ARCHITECTS has risen progressively to a situation of international renown and is today recognised as a key figure on the contemporary architecture scene. In 2008, the practice was awarded the World Building of the Year Award for its design for Milan's Bocconi University and in 2016 the RIBA International First Prize for its Lima University project. In addition to their work as practicing architects, Yvonne Farrell and Shelly McNamara teach at leading universities including the EPFL in Lausanne and the Accademia d’Archittettura in Mendrisio. This year they were general curators at the Venice Architecture Biennale "Freespace".
