The rise starts on the floor

The rise starts on the floor: from 14 to 17 January, Domotex 2017 once again provides a tour of the world of floors. (photograph: Deutsche Messe AG)
A wealth of new products and technologies from the world of floors once again awaits architects, interior designers and designers in January 2017 at the DOMOTEX trade fair in Hannover. To make sure that you quickly find the topics relevant for design and planning in a clearly accessible way, World-Architects again offers practice-oriented “Guided Tours” of the trade fair in the scope of [email protected], which are this time complemented by «Themed Tours». However, before we start on 14 January 2017, a brief warm-up is, of course, necessary.
The DOMOTEX trade fair in Hannover has been the most important meeting point for the international floor covering industry for many years. Evidence of this is not least provided by the numbers of visitors and exhibitors: the last edition of the trade fair in January 2016 recorded 1,441 exhibitors from 59 nations in the twelve exhibition halls and about 45,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. The aim is to keep this standard in 2017 or, in the best case, even do better. So DOMOTEX once again provides numerous events specifically geared to architects, interior designers and designers. The most important contact point and information platform are the three special areas [email protected] by Stylepark. In previous years,  «Guided Tours» by World-Architects have started here twice a day, which are this time complemented with the «Themed Tours». What more could you want!

The panorama
For the fourth consecutive time, the three [email protected] areas in the Halls 6, 9 and 17 serve as exhibition area, auditorium and meeting point for the industry. The exhibits comprise new products and design highlights. Under the chairmanship of Munich-based industrial and product designer Stefan Diez, nine renowned jury members selected the exhibits from the fields of design, architecture, interior decoration, the press and real estate management. Textile and resilient floor coverings are presented in Hall 6, while in Hall 9 the focus is on parquet and laminate flooring as well as application and laying techniques, and Hall 17 presents modern hand-made carpet and rugs.

World-Architects also developed the «Themed Tours», which lead participants around the trade fair subsequent to the dialogues about the theme of the day. (photograph: Mathias Duerr / World-Architects)
The Themed Tours
Besides the exhibits, relevant and future-oriented topics are presented and discussed by renowned speakers every morning in the context of the special show in Hall 6. Right on the first day of the trade fair (Saturday, 14 January), Swiss designer Alfredo Häberli, a special guest at DOMOTEX 2017, will deliver the keynote speech on the theme of “Future Living”. Subsequently, Häberli and Martin Haller from Vienna-based Caramel architekten will discuss the topic “Home living – Where to next?”. While the «Dialogues» introduce the respective theme of the day, visitors have subsequently the possibility to obtain in-depth information on this topic during a «Themed Tours» by World-Architects to selected manufacturers and take a look at – and, of course, also touch - relevant product novelties and technologies.

The young creative talents
In the scope of the new DOMOTEX format «Young Designer Trendtable», the trade fair organiser and Stefan Diez invited a group of designers, who are eager to try out new things, and asked them to look into the future of flooring design. In a workshop conducted together with Stefan Diez, the five aspiring designers Bilge Nur Saltik from Turkey/England, Christy Cole from Scotland, Klaas Kuiken from the Netherlands, Hanne Willmann from Germany, and Victoria Wilmotte from France worked on groups of themes, which they elaborated in the subsequent weeks. The results will be exhibited every day on the spot as part of [email protected]
Carpet Design Awards: new jury chairwoman Stephanie Odegard, creative director and president of Stephanie Odegard Collection.
At the peak
At a good trade fair, award ceremonies should not be left out. This is also true for DOMOTEX 2017, where the presentation of the “Carpet Design Awards”, which is an award for the most beautiful hand-made carpets and rugs in the world, is eagerly awaited. At DOMOTEX 2017, the Carpet Design Awards have new jury members. Carpet designer Stephanie Odegard from New York acts as chairwoman. Other members of the panel are interior designer Vanessa Brady, Wilhard Kühne, Kustaa Saksi as well as Hadi Teherani. They will work together to select the best and most original designer carpets and rugs, which are characterised by a special combination of design, quality and craftsmanship. The designer pieces will be exhibited during the trade fair on the [email protected] Area in Hall 17. The coveted “Carpet Design Awards” are conferred for the twelfth time already, as usual in the context of a festive ceremony on the Sunday of the trade fair.

The craftsman’s know-how
Obviously, a good floor covering also involves craftsmanship. Retail and the skilled trades can learn interesting information relevant for everyday professional routines in the lecture programme hosted by «Treffpunkt Handwerk» (Hall 7, Stand D11).

The prospect
Although Hannover is mainly known as lowland, the probably most famous and most glorious peak performers of the international floor covering industry come together at the DOMOTEX in January. Those who want to learn from these successful architects, interior designers and designers and would like to exchange ideas should prepare for a trip to the lowland of Lower Saxony. «Real» mountains can then be climbed further south.
