Having completed his architectural studies at Aachen Technical University, Nikolaus Goetze joined gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects in 1987, where he has been a partner since 1998. In 2019, Goetze was appointed Visiting Professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. As a co-initiator of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), he regularly leads workshops there. Goetze’s best known international projects include the Guangxi Culture & Art Center, the Grand Theater in Chongqing, the master plan for Lingang New City (today Nanhui New City), and the China Maritime Museum there, the Hanoi Museum, and Deutsches Haus in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Important projects in Germany include the extension to Kunsthalle Mannheim, the Alvano Residence in Hamburg, and the extension of the Technical University in Hamburg-Harburg.

Volkwin Marg

In 1965, together with Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg founded gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. From 1979 to 1984 Marg was President of the Association of German Architects (BDA), and from 1986 to 2003 he held the Chair of Urban Design and Material Studies at the Faculty for Architecture at Aachen Technical University. In 2012, Hamburg’s HafenCity University awarded him an honorary doctorate. Marg is co-founder of the gmp Foundation and the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) for the advancement of young architects, and he has received numerous awards, such as the Fritz Schumacher Prize, the medal of the Freie Akademie der Künste Hamburg, the Grand Award of the Association of German Architects, the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, and the Mayor Stolten medal of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Marg’s best known buildings include the European Patent Office in Munich, the New Leipzig Trade Fair, the refurbished and re-roofed Olympic Stadium in Berlin, and the stadiums in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Brasília, Manaus, and Belo Horizonte for the FIFA World Cups in South Africa and Brazil.

Hubert Nienhoff

After qualifying at Aachen Technical University in 1985, Hubert Nienhoff started work for Christoph Mäckler Architects. From 1988 to 1991 he was Assistant Professor at the Chair of Urban Design and Material Studies at Aachen Technical University and, in 1988, joined gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects where he was appointed Partner in 1993. He is a co-initiator of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), where he teaches regularly. He has been responsible for numerous projects, such as the New Leipzig Trade Fair, Berlin-Spandau Railway Station, Berlin Olympic Stadium, the stadiums in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Brasília, Manaus, and Belo Horizonte for the FIFA World Cup games in South Africa and Brazil, the Hans-Sachs-Haus in Gelsenkirchen, and the New Tehran Trade Fair.

Stephan Schütz

Stephan Schütz studied architecture at Braunschweig Technical University. After qualifying he joined gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects in 1994 and was appointed Partner in 2006. Since 2009, Schütz has been regularly leading workshops at the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), which he helped to initiate. His most important projects include the Civic Center in Weimar, the New Tempodrom in Berlin, the Christian Church in Beijing, the CYTS Plaza office building in Beijing, the Grand Theaters in Qingdao and Tianjin, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Universiade Sports Center in Shenzhen, and the conversion and refurbishment of Dresden’s Kulturpalast.

Meinhard von Gerkan ✝

In 1965, together with Volkwin Marg, Meinhard von Gerkan founded gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. From 1974 to 2002, von Gerkan held the Chair of Architectural Design at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Philipps University in Marburg in 2002 and also by Chung Yuan Christian University in 2005. In 2007, the School of Design of East China Normal University in Shanghai awarded von Gerkan an honorary professorship and, since 2014, he has been Advising Professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. Von Gerkan was a co-founder of the gmp Foundation and the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), and he has received numerous awards, including the Romanian State prize, the Grand Award of the German Association of Architects, the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, and the Liang Sicheng Prize of the Architectural Society of China. His best known projects include Berlin Tegel Airport, Berlin Main Railway Station, Villa Guna in Jūrmala, Latvia, the Hanoi Museum, the Vietnamese National Assembly in Hanoi, the Grand Theater in Chongqing, the reconstruction and renovation of the National Museum of China in Beijing, and the master plan of Lingang New City near Shanghai.

Magdalene Weiß

Wei Wu

Show Biography

After completing his studies in Chongqing, China, Wu Wei worked as an architect in Lanzhou and Shanghai from 1992 to 1994. In 1995 he started further architectural studies at ETH Zurich, where he studied under Prof. Mario Campi and finished with a diploma in 2000. After working for the Zurich practice Skyline Architecture, Wu joined gmp · Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners in 2001, where he initially started as Head Representative of the offices in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2004 he became an Associate Partner, in 2009 Partner for China and then full Partner in 2019.
