When Space becomes an Experience
Out of the many aspects making Arndt Geiger Herrmann Architects’ oeuvre so exciting and extraordinary, it is mainly two that outstandingly characterize the firm’s architectural stance: firstly, the references, in terms of both form and content, to 21st century Swiss modernism, which the architects have steadfastly devoted themselves to, irrespective of all postmodern trends, whose idiosyncrasies continue to have repercussions to this day; and secondly, the reflection upon the location, the acknowledgement of and involvement with different truths and their diversity, without which their architectural concepts would be unthinkable. Their works – the Bellerive office building in Zurich for instance, an island in the traffic stream, or the Kittenmühle residential development, located on the edge of the woods in Herrliberg – prove to be «modern» in the Loosian sense of the term, because they, holding their own and showing a no-nonsence stance, casually fit in with any existing context – whether urban or rural –, while at the same time providing a given location with a new sense of direction. The Zurich architectural team’s credo, «create space», becomes, for their buildings’ users, a novel experience: of «experiencing space». Arndt Geiger Herrmann actually succeed in creating spaces in which people feel at ease and which reflect their tastes and lifestyles. The ability to make tangible the dialog between the interior and the exterior, between interior and exterior spaces, as well as their connections and interaction in everyday life, is what distinguishes this Swiss studio – and its residential, office, hotel or commercial buildings. We are delighted, therefore, to have, in our exhibition of works by Arndt Geiger Herrmann Architects from Zurich: «Space Creates Place – Place Creates Space», yet another highlight in our series of presentations of Swiss architecture and its most outstanding representatives.
