With the theme Johnston and Lee hope to "examine, through the work of the chosen participants, the continuous engagement with questions of history and architecture as an evolutionary practice." per a CAB statement. The theme goes against modernism's "insistence on creating works that are unprecedented and unrelated to architectures of the past," and it comes as the directors confronting a piece of Chicago's history: the renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art, a 1996 building designed by Josef Paul Kleihues.

Todd Palmer, CAB Executive Director, said of the theme and its participants: "This year’s list of participants was carefully chosen to showcase the future of architecture and design rooted in history. Through presenting a variety of work, we aim to give visitors of all kinds, from leaders across the global architecture community to the interested traveler, an in-depth look at architecture as we know it today, and the chance to be inspired by how architecture is making new history in cities around the world."

Like the inaugural CAB in 2015, the second edition will take place (16 September 2017 - 7 January 2018) at the Chicago Cultural Center and additional sites across the city.
