Christo's "Over the River" Moves Forward

Per a statement on the court ruling, Christo said, "I was always confident the court would uphold the BLM’s actions because the Environmental Impact Statement conducted by the BLM was thorough and comprehensive. We have one appeal in state court still outstanding, but today we took a significant step forward in realizing Over The River." Since 2012 the project's installation date has been postponed due to pending litigation, as is common with the projects of Christo and his late wife, even though the proper federal, state and local approvals have been in place since November 2011.

Per the artist, Over the River consists of "5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels to be suspended high above the Arkansas River along a 42-mile stretch of the river between Salida and Cañon City in south-central Colorado." Sited so as to be viewed from above, from an adjacent roadway (drawing below), as well as from the river below (drawing above), Over the River is planned to be in place for two weeks in a future August, following a 27-month construction schedule.
