The Naomi Milgrom Foundation has announced that Bangkok's (all)zone, led by co-founder and design director Rachaporn Choochuey, has been selected to design the next MPavilion, which will open in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens in November.
The selection of Rachaporn Choochuey's firm comes in a year that coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Thai-Australian diplomatic relations, as pointed out by Busadee Santipitaks, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand, in an announcement. "Thailand and Australia have longstanding relations across a wide range of areas in all dimensions," she said, "I am very pleased that the collaboration between MPavilion and all(zone) will reflect the strength of Thai-Australian people-to-people links and deepen our bilateral ties."
Not just politics, (all)zone was selected for the ninth MPavilion because of their "commitment to designing built environments where people can feel at home in the world," per the announcement. Though not as well known as previous MPavilion designers such as Rem Koolhaas, Glenn Murcutt, Amanda Levete, and Carme Pinós, all(zone) have established themselves as creators of "lively projects which reuse and recycle local materials in bold and innovative new ways." The commission should guarantee that Rachaporn and her team gain a good deal of exposure, both in Australia and the rest of the world, given the attention the annual designs receive in the architectural press.
Established in 2014 by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, MPavilion is a temporary structure set up to host events every summer in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens. Following each season, the MPavilions are gifted to the people of Victoria and relocated permanently to a public place. Australian architect Sean Godsell designed the inaugural MPavilion, with the most recent pavilion, The Lightcatcher, designed by Italy's MAP Studio.
(All)zone's design for the 2022 MPavilion will be unveiled in June. In the meantime, below are images of a few of their projects.
