The jury, L-R: Ivan Blasi (coordinator of EU Mies Award), Dominique Jakob, Peter Cachola Schmal, Anna Ramos (Director of Fundació Mies van der Rohe), Małgorzata Omilanowska, Stephen Bates, Juulia Kauste, Pelin Derviş, and Gonçalo Byrne (All photographs courtesy of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe)

If the shortlisted works are a gauge of trends in European architecture over the last two years, considerations of built heritage and housing are as important as cultural works, the latter of which tend to win the prize. According to a statement from the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, a third of the works "tackle the challenage of contemporary architecture in relation with built heritage," while another third "tackles the contemporary challenges of housing." In fact, since the inaugural award in 1988, not a single housing project has won the EU Mies Award.

Geographically, nearly a third of the shortlisted works are found in just three countries, each with four projects: France, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain follow with three each; two each are in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, and Turkey; and one each are found in Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Sweden.

From these 40 shortlisted works, the jury will select 5 finalists in mid-February. They will then visit each finalist work and honor the Winner and Emerging Architect in mid-May.
