PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society by Andrés Jaque: Backstage Notes on Collecting Architecture

PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society is a provocative site-specific intervention developed by Andrés Jaque for the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe–designed Barcelona Pavilion in 2012 and recently reconceived and acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago. Join Jaque in conversation with curator Maite Borjabad as they discuss the narratives of the work and reveal the complex acquisition process behind this unique installation.

Commissioned by Fundació Mies van der Rohe Barcelona, Jaque began his project by looking in an unusual place: the basement under the landmark pavilion. This space revealed the hidden nature of the building, or the pavilion’s ghost (PHANTOM), composed of abandoned objects, building materials, and maintenance supplies that together reveal the Barcelona Pavilion as a social construction resulting from specific technological moments and civic initiatives.

This lecture is organized in collaboration with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe Barcelona and the Architecture & Design Society.
