The Kang Quan Pavilion, located in Beijing China, was designed as a multipurpose community facility. Its initial function was as a sales centre for a 5,000 home urban development, then adapted to serve as an art exhibition centre with associated community centre tea house. The building is characterized by its double loop circulation that commences by ascending the ramp located in the courtyard, then leading through the exhibition hall, followed by crossing via the bridge into the tea house / sales area, and from there back down through the courtyard to the entry plaza. The elevated view provides connection and overlook to the adjacent landscape and the flow of people comping and going. The resulting U-shaped building shields the visitors at its Northern edge from prevailing sand storms, while offering a well lit courtyard at its centre. The ground plane has been modulated to incorporated the community services and staff functions on one side while the mechanical systems and storage rooms are hidden within a grass mount below the cantilevered building.
