The Rehabilitation Court is a place of healing and progressive challenges. The design intention is to layer a microcosm of physical challenges found in the urban environment. The Court is designed to overlay rehabilitation therapy activities within an outdoor garden setting with direct proximity and connection to the interior gymnasiums. The court is organized into linear spaces that are bounded by bamboo planting in raised, colored concrete “trays” with guide-rail edges to support the various therapeutic functions. Primary circulation passing from the gymnasiums opens into spacious table seating for waiting, gathering, conversation and occupational therapy uses.
From here the courtyard surface rises gradually towards more challenging elements encouraging a metaphoric “ascent” towards the west, through the graceful canopy of bamboo that incorporates bench seating along the way, until finally revealing the sensational elevated views to the west over the distant San Francisco Bay.
The ascent into the grove is made by negotiating curb cut ramp, curbs, ramps, and stairs of varying lengths with various riser and tread dimensions all of which are provided with handrails integral to the planter edges, for safe negotiation and training use. The therapeutic elements also include a car parked on the this roof garden, ground surface texture challenges such as wood decking, cobbles and pea gravel, therapeutic gardening areas, putting green, and an open game area designated for a basketball or badminton court, all interwoven within the filtering canopy of the bamboo grove.
