The regional exhibition “Tabu?! Secret Concealed” brought together highlights from the greatest ethnological collections of Lower Saxony. In over 700 m², visitors were introduced to 200 objects related to cultural taboos, secret rituals and clandestine knowledge in various cultures around the world. These objects of religion and ceremony implicitly signify what a society considers inappropriate or “forbidden.” These complex unspoken rules are often hidden from and not understood by societal outsiders.

The exhibition architecture and design captures the complexity of the relationship between outsiders and insiders by manipulating elements of camouflage, obscurity and modified perspective. It is in this aim that the objects only reveal themselves to visitors upon a second look. Hidden behind impressive ceiling-high lightboxes, the objects appear as the visitor further steps into the darkened space. Once deeper within the exhibition rooms, the visitor becomes an insider, privy to the secrets and histories of the objects. Stripe patterns decorate and animate the exhibition architecture. Sounds and visual effects designate taboo zones within the exhibition and deepen the visitors’ understanding of the artifacts.
