Fiterman Hall at BMCC

Like a phoenix Fiterman Hall, BMCC’s newest education building, rose from the ashes of 9/11. Perhaps the soaring stairs of this “vertical campus” recall the powerful image, but there’s no doubt that lighting knits the many classrooms, labs, libraries, galleries and café into a coherent whole. Designed on the cusp of the LED “revolution” and standardized on T8s, CFLs and MH sources, the project nevertheless achieves LEED-certified equivalence while meeting stringent Owner requirements for classroom and lab illuminance. Tight budget constraints demanded cost-effective LF solutions in educational and admin spaces, so lobby, lounge and daylight-responsive atrium lighting comes out to play.
