Description
This mixed-use project forms the vibrant urban hub of a new residential development in the southern outskirts of Beijing. It consists of a shopping mall with a cinema, three SOHO towers and a separate retail pavilion. The inherent density of the scheme has been moderated; the normal massive block was deconstructed into an animated cluster of buildings, achieved by breaking it into several interlocking components, creating differentiation and spatial variation. Two ground levels were introduced to activate the higher floors of the building to create a shopping “village” on the 4th and 5th floor for dining and entertainment. The circulation avoids the conventional mall race track layout, employing an arrangement of village-like streets and courtyards. The roof of the mall has been transformed into a park for the SOHO towers with some restaurants extending onto the 6th floor, taking full advantage of the garden and supporting the mixing of building functions at higher levels. An external pedestrian route that traverses the main façade enables people to leave the cinema and entertainment area at night without having to walk through a closed mall after normal operating hours.
