Joe MacDonald is founding principal of URBAN A&O LLC and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where he received his Master of Architecture in 1992. He regularly incorporates his academic design research into practice at the scales of buildings, landscape, and urban design, and his work has been published and exhibited widely.
“My goal as a practitioner is seeking out imaginative intersections between technology, science, architecture, and the environment in an effort to communicate emerging developments within each of these fields to the widest possible audiences. My work has focused on several fronts simultaneously, from theoretical design idea collaborations, competitions, and art installations, to architectural, landscape, and planning projects at a large urban scale. I have lectured extensively on the relationship between architecture and technology. My built work investigates the possibilities of emerging design and manufacturing technologies as well as their implications on new building materials and assemblies, and how they may impact and sustain our collective cultural and social lives within our communities.”
