Klimahaus 8° Ost with Swivel Bridge

 Back to Projects list
Location
Bremerhaven, Germany
Year
2009

The Klimahaus takes visitors on a journey along the 8th meridian of longitude with nine stops along the way as they become acquainted with the Earth’s various climate zones.

Taking its inspiration from the Klimahaus concept and the address “Meridian of Longitude 8,” the pane grid of the Klimahaus façade was conceived as a network of these meridians. A total of 1,980 LED light dots positioned at the intersecting points calls up associations with a view that spans the globe, which the Klimahaus seeks to convey.

The free architectural form of the building was to be supported by light and be experienced in its totality by night. To this end, four animated sequences were designed and programmed for the Klimahaus. One version with static glowing light dots was set up for the daily presentation of the project given each evening. This gives the Klimahaus its identity by night. Embedded within the Havenwelten (Harbor Worlds) project, it looks like a futuristic building and sparks people’s curiosity.

The total connected load for the façade lighting is only 2.6 KW; in relation to the total façade surface of approx. 7,700 square meters this represents 0.33 W/m2: an exceptionally positive energy balance sheet for a project on this scale.

The swivel bridge was illuminated by light fields integrated in the ground. A printed grid of white points reflects the light into the area. The lighting is completely glare-free.
