Corning Museum of Glass Unveils Expansion Design

The Corning Museum of Glass, located in upstate New York, has unveiled the preliminary design for its new North Wing, designed by Thomas Phifer & Partners. The 100,000-square-foot expansion will consist of galleries and facilities for glass-blowing demonstrations, all housed in a skylit building of glass and white aluminum. The North Wing will overlook a new one-acre campus green designed by Reed Hilderbrand Associates. Phifer's design links to museum components by Harrison & Abramowitz (1951) and Smith-Miller + Hawkinson (2001); the latter will transform the theater in its building into a glassmaking venue as part of the expansion. Groundbreaking for the fully funded North Wing expansion took place on June 7.  jh
