knippershelbig is a multidisciplinary team of structural and façade engineers, with offices in Stuttgart, New York and Berlin. We plan, develop, and design a diverse range of innovative structures and building enclosures: educational institutions, residential buildings, and office blocks; museums, bridges, and stadia; airports, public artwork, and sculpture.

We act as an active partner in interdisciplinary design teams. We develop integrated design concepts in concert with owners, architects and experts from other disciplines and accompany these designs from inception to final construction. With our engineering expertise, we also assist firms specialized in façade and specialty structures with the design, analysis, and detailing of technically and geometrically complex projects around the world.

With unbridled technical curiosity, we continually refine our design and calculation tools and pioneer the application of new and innovative building materials and construction methods.

Our participation in numerous design competitions has fostered an engineering approach which weighs competing structural concepts in our determination of preferred engineering solutions. This approach has enabled us to participate in interdisciplinary teams on numerous successful design competitions such as the Shenzhen Airport Competition, the Timber Bridge Design Competition in Vienna, the Gothenburg Cable Car Competition, and the Elephant Enclosure Competition for the Stuttgart Zoo. Along with aesthetic, structural, and detailing considerations, ease of construction and project economy, sustainability takes on an increasingly important role as a pivotal driver in the development of our designs.

Advanced digital design, calculation, and visualization methods are essential everyday tools in our project development. All of our building projects are processed using integrated 3-D building information modelling (BIM) during all project phases.

Many of our projects have been honored with awards - most recently, we received the German Timber Construction Award (2017, Stuttgart Timber Bridges), German Steel Construction Award (2018, Smart Factory, Chicago) and the German Structural Engineering Award (2018, Staatsoper, Berlin).

knippershelbig Advanced Engineering was founded in 2001 in Stuttgart by Jan Knippers and Thorsten Helbig. After many years of working for the office, Boris Peter joined the management board and has been managing partner since 2014. Jan Knippers left the office in 2017. Since 2013, the two partners - Thorsten Helbig and Boris Peter - have led the Stuttgart, New York and Berlin offices, where they are supported by Matthias Oppe, Florian Scheible, Roman Schieber, Jochen Riederer, Jan Mittelstädt, Florian Meier and Laurent Giampellegrini.
