The Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street is a chronological visual narrative about the development of a residential building in Beijing China between 2008 and 2017. By depicting how the building was transformed from regular apartments to a spontaneously-grown urban group form with commercial venues opened in those apartments, how they were demolished by the government as to clean up “first-floor-homes-turned-businesses”, and how the building was restored for residence only again in the end, this series takes architectural drawing as a critical craft and examines the relationship between the two forces from the civil and administration in urban development.
