Venice Biennale 13th International Architecture Exhibition Japan Pavilion
Following the tsunami and earthquake in 2011, architect Toyo Ito began to design "Homes for All" - places where disaster survivors living in isolated emergency housing units could gather to eat, drink, and talk. Ito serves as comissioner for this year's Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which will focus on the process of building these community spaces. "The Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami has led us to believe that contemporary architecture with its modernist foundations needs to change, and the questions of where the problems lie in contemporary architecture, and how it ought to be changed, are major themes for the Japanese pavilion this time," the architect told designboom.com last December.
