Osaka Central Post Office Planning Exhibition
Looming formidibly over the broad intersection across from Osaka Station, the Central Post Office is the area's sole remaining pre-war structure. Students from three universities propose plans for converting the iconic building into a tourism resource for the city. The concept - now standard in the United States and Europe - is to preserve both exterior and interior, but rather than freeze the structure in the past, turn it into something relevant to the present. The resulting designs are necessarily unfinished, yet full of fresh awareness and innovation.
In conjunction with the exhibition of student work architectural historian Shunsuke Kurakata will lead a series of discussions with guest architects on converting historic buildings (for details, see website below).
